GRADUATE SPEECH EXCERPTS

You will have times where you feel like you’re walking on a treadmill and things are okay sometimes boring and there are times where you are bare feet and walking on thorns. Remember, you will eventually find shoes because there’s always a better pair out there. Once you get a hold of them, tie them on tight. For your life is your territory, your compass, and your future. Seize the opportunity and put on the shoes your parents, teachers, and you yourselves had made!

The day I heard about AMES, I had my doubts.   But along with those doubts, I had my own private hopes.   Because of those hopes, I decided to go out on a limb, and come to a new high school where nothing is concrete and sure, but everything is fluid and debatable, and I'm sure we all knew we were taking a huge chance.   I had made a decision that would likely change the rest of my life.

This day as we graduates walk out of this room we will be different we will be held to a higher standard, but none will ever be higher than the standard that you teachers held us too because you believed we could meet it, you believed that we deserved to reach this day. For that I thank you.

Today, I along with my fellow graduates will be declared the legacy class, the first graduating class of the Academy for Math, Engineering, and Science. I have but one piece of advice to give all of you today. The paths which our journeys will take are ultimately our choice. Be brave, take chances, be bold and create journeys filled with opportunity and possibility. For we only live one life, take the most out of every day and create a journey that when it’s all over, you will be proud of.

Throughout my years at AMES high school I have received a lot of help and support from not only my family but my teachers as well. I never dreamed of having the opportunity to go to an early college high school and I could not have done it without help I received. My family has always been supportive of me throughout my school years, but when I had the chance to go to AMES it became a little bit of a challenge with the transportation involved. Instead of going to a high school that was five minutes away I now had the chance to attend a more elite school a lot farther away.

Because we're in Ames, graduation is less of a celebration and more of an accomplishment. We didn't just sit around and wade out high school. We were active students willing to work for our education and succeeded in getting it. Whether we learned it from a 10 inch thick Art History book, or an openly opinionated English teacher, we have all been taught how our education affects the way we view the world around us. How many people started noticing architecture a lot more since taking Art History? How many have watched a bouncy ball and knew a calculus equation about the angles and height? That is why we have been called Ames Nerds. We aren't afraid to use our education... or TI-83s.

One of the small secrets that I learned at AMES s that graduating from high school was only going to be the next step in furthering my education. I understand that going to college and graduating will be the next goal. Another small secret is that I now understand what it means to be a life long learner. I hope I will learn new things every day in my life. AMES has taught me that this is possible if I put in the effort.
