The idea of “Fighting Anti-Intellectualism” has been in my head for four years now, and it is just starting to make sense.  I am starting to realize that thinking about things isn’t so bad after all.  I have convinced myself that being intelligent, or being an intellectual is completely ok.

I know I speak for every graduate when I say that without AMES,  we wouldn’t be the people that we are today.  This school has molded us into intellectual students and I am so thankful for this.

Like the tree that had to fight, and the man that had to toil, we all have had to sacrifice things to come here. By the sweat of our brows, we can stand here today and firmly state we have done something great. However, our journey isn’t yet over. Standing here today is a mark of achievement, but our struggle continues all through life.

Our teachers at AMES have taught us to be these great spirits, always questioning and thinking for ourselves.  We have received so many opportunities at AMES to explore our world that would not have been possible at a regular school.  I think that it is safe to say that every one of us is leaving this school with a higher level of thinking than what we entered with.  We have been prepared for our future, whatever it may hold.

As we leave here today and go into the real world; remember who you are and always stand up for your beliefs; shine in the world, just like the brightest star in the sky. One day, I was sitting in Skunkworks with friends doing homework or something, when Paul Ramsey walked by. He pointed at us and said, “You’re in trouble.” I asked him what he meant and he ushered me into the hall. “Amber,” He said, “I just wanted to tell you that I am proud of you, you are the reason we made AMES.”  What he meant is AMES is geared toward students who are willing to make a difference in their own lives.

Finally, we made it to graduation.  It has taken a lot of work and we all have all overcome many challenges to get here, and those challenges tested our limits and helped us figure out who we are.  The quote that I used for my senior project was by Blaise Pascal: We must learn our limits.  We are all something, but none of us are everything.  This quote means a lot to me because that is probably one of the most important things I learned at AMES; however I didn’t do that alone.  I had the help of my friends, the AMES faculty and my family to help me test my limits and figure out the something that I am.  High school is a time of challenges and change, and those challenges are what help us define ourselves.
