Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Academy of Math, Engineering and Science (AMES) private?

No, AMES is a public charter school.  Charter schools have a charter, or a contract, between the school and the Charter School Board at the Utah State Board of Education.  The charter sets forth the conditions under which the school will operate.  Additional information, can be obtained through the Charter Schools Home Page on the Utah State Office of Education web site at: http://www.usoe.k12.ut.us/charterschools/

How much does it cost?

AMES has the same costs as other public high schools.  There is no special tuition.  We may require fees for some coursework or textbook rental fees.  Generally, such fees are similar to other high schools in the Granite and Salt Lake City School Districts.  All fees are approved by the AMES Board of Trustees.  Any school fees will be reduced or waived for parents, guardians and students in accordance with state law.

How is AMES funded?

As a public school, AMES is funded primarily by state fundingreeceiving less that a regular school district.  In addition, we are actively pursuing contributions from a variety of sources, including businesses and foundations.

Why is a school like AMES needed?

There is a major shortage of qualified young people going into math, engineering, science, and related technical fields.  AMES will help prepare students to pursue careers in these fields. Also, as an early college high school, AMES is commited to support every AMES student in becoming college ready.

Who can attend AMES?

All 8th grade students can apply for upcoming school year.  We are particularly interesting in having a diverse student body.  The best student body will be one with differing ideas and backgrounds from which everyone can learn.  We aren’t looking for students with 4.0s – we want all students who are eager, interested, and motivated to apply.

There is no entrance examination.  After acceptance, students’ interests and abilities will be assessed in conjunction with staff and parents to determine course readiness and placement.  Assistance will be provided for students who require or request any additional support as they pursue the course requirements.

How will you select students?

There will be an entering Freshman class of 125 accepted each year.  Student slots are allocated to mirror the overall student demographics of the 14 high schools within the Granite and Salt Lake City School Districts.  Students will be selected from these areas by lottery if the number of applicants exceeds the allocated slots.  If there are fewer than125 applicants, we will accept applications from other Utah school districts.

Where is AMES located?

AMES is located at Cottonwood High School, 5715 South 1300 East, Salt Lake City, UT.

What if I’m already enrolled elsewhere?

Even if you are already enrolled in another high school, in a private school, or are home schooled, you may apply to AMES.

Will my credits transfer from another high school?

Yes, credits that align with AMES courses are transferable. AMES is accredited by Northwest.
How will I get there?

No student will be left behind when it comes to transportation.  Parents and AMES will share the responsibility for the transportation of students to and from school through contract services with Granite and Salt Lake City School District Transportation.  Services, such as the “hub” strategy from the Olympics, may also be utilized.  We do not have the funding to pay for door-to-door transportation. UTA passes are provided for each AMES student as part of their registration fees.

What hours are classes held?

AMES will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at 3:40 p.m.  The first period block (7:30-8:55) conducted by Cottonwood High School is an option for students who are interested in release time or an elective that Cottonwood offers that doesn’t fit into their normal schedule. AMES dismisses at 3:15 p.m. each Wednesday for staff professional development.

What are my extra-curricular opportunities?

Clubs and activities are readily available, and anyone in the AMES school community can start a club addressing their particular interests, goals and the school’s curriculum.  AMES students participate in a variety of extracurricular activities both in AMES and Cottonwood High School.

What types of sports are available at AMES?

AMES students have the opportunity to participate in CHS sports.  AMES does not have separate teams.  If you play sports and compete with other schools, the AMES schedule can create difficult decisions for students who may have to choose between a rigorous pre college curriculum and the demands of high school athletics.

Who are the AMES teachers?

AMES Students learn from licensed and highly qualified teachers.  In addition, faculty from the University of Utah and visiting professionals offer specialized seminars and extended exploratory sessions. Mentors from various organizations are important to our students.  11th grade students participate in directed internships and extensive research projects.  These experiences focus on academic, career, life skills, and research activities under the direction of knowledgeable and supportive adult role models.

Is there parent involvement?

We see parents active in the success of their students.  There are a variety of opportunities for parents, including an active PTSO (parent-teacher-student organization) as well as opportunities to volunteer for AMES activities.
