Is the Academy of Math, Engineering and Science (AMES) private?
No,
AMES is a public charter school. Charter schools have a charter,
or a contract, between the school and the Charter School Board at the Utah State Board of
Education. The charter sets forth the conditions under which the
school will operate. Additional information, can be obtained
through the Charter Schools Home Page on the Utah State Office of
Education web site at: http://www.usoe.k12.ut.us/charterschools/
How much does it cost?
AMES
has the same costs as other public high schools. There is no
special tuition. We may require fees for some coursework or
textbook rental fees. Generally, such fees are similar to other
high schools in the Granite and Salt Lake City School Districts.
All fees are approved by the AMES Board of Trustees. Any
school fees will be reduced or waived for parents, guardians and
students in accordance with state law.
How is AMES funded?

addition, we are actively pursuing contributions from a variety of
sources, including businesses and foundations.
Why is a school like AMES needed?
There

8th grade students can apply for upcoming school year.
We are particularly interesting in having a diverse student body.
The best student body will be one with differing ideas and
backgrounds from which everyone can learn. We aren’t looking for
students with 4.0s – we want all students who are eager, interested,
and motivated to apply.
There
is no entrance examination. After acceptance, students’ interests
and abilities will be assessed in conjunction with staff and parents to
determine course readiness and placement. Assistance will be provided for students who require or
request any additional support as they pursue the course requirements.
How will you select students?
There
will be an entering Freshman class of 125 accepted each year. Student slots are allocated to
mirror the overall student demographics of the 14 high schools within
the Granite and Salt Lake City School Districts. Students will be
selected from these areas by lottery if the number of applicants
exceeds the allocated slots. If there are fewer than125
applicants, we will accept applications from other Utah school
districts.

transportation of students to and from school through contract services
with Granite and Salt Lake City School District Transportation.
